Sod Installation Cost Guide

A new sod lawn is one of the fastest transformations you can make to a yard — dirt on Friday, green on Saturday. But the price you see quoted per square foot only makes sense once you understand what's underneath it, because in Merced County the prep work under the sod matters more than the sod itself. Here's how the costs break down and where people typically overspend or underspend.

Typical Sod Installation Costs

Installed sod in our area typically runs $1 to $2.50 per square foot, depending on the grass variety, the condition of your yard, and how much prep is needed. That range covers the sod, delivery, soil prep, and installation.

Some quick math for common yard sizes:

• 500 sq ft side yard: roughly $500 – $1,250
• 1,000 sq ft front lawn: roughly $1,000 – $2,500
• 2,500 sq ft front and back: roughly $2,500 – $6,250

If a bid comes in well under that range, ask exactly what prep is included. Sod laid on unprepared clay looks great for three weeks and then declines fast — that's the most common lawn failure we get called out to fix.

Where the Money Actually Goes

Removing what's there

Dead lawn, weeds, or old landscaping has to come out first, roots included. Tear-out and haul-away can add meaningfully to a job, especially if there's Bermuda grass involved — Bermuda left in the ground will invade a new fescue lawn within a season.

Soil prep in clay

This is the part that separates a lawn that lasts from one that struggles. Merced's clay-heavy soil compacts hard, drains slowly, and suffocates roots if it's not worked. A proper install means tilling, amending with compost, grading so water runs away from the house, and rolling smooth. It's most of the labor in the job, and it's the part you never want skipped.

Sprinkler check or install

Sod needs consistent water — daily at first, in a Merced summer sometimes twice daily for the first couple of weeks. If your existing sprinklers have dead heads or bad coverage, fix them before the sod goes down, not after. A full new sprinkler system typically runs $1,500 to $6,000 depending on yard size and zones; details on our irrigation systems page.

The sod itself

Most lawns here are a tall fescue blend — it handles our heat reasonably well, stays green through the tule fog winter, and takes normal family and dog traffic. Hybrid Bermuda is tougher in full blasting sun and uses less water, but it goes brown and dormant in winter. Fescue is the default; Bermuda is worth discussing for hot, high-traffic, full-sun yards.

When to Install Sod in Merced

Timing matters more here than in milder climates:

• Best: March through May and late September through November. Warm enough for roots to establish, not so hot that the sod cooks before it knits down.
• Doable but demanding: summer. Sod installed in July can succeed, but it needs disciplined watering through the 100-degree stretch, and any irrigation gap shows up as a brown rectangle.
• Slow: December through February. Sod survives fine, but it roots slowly in cold soil and stays vulnerable longer.

Sod, Seed, or Something Else?

Seed is cheaper up front but takes months of babying, and in our heat the establishment window is narrow. For most homeowners, sod's instant result and higher success rate is worth the difference. And it's worth asking whether you need lawn everywhere — a smaller sod area where people actually walk and play, framed by low-water planting beds, often costs less overall and cuts the water bill. Before removing existing lawn, check current City of Merced and state turf-replacement rebate programs — availability changes, but active programs can offset conversion costs if you go that route instead.
